AAA Flashlight FAQ's
You're looking for the best AAA flashlight, but you have some questions.
Buying the right flashlight can be tricky, especially with all the options that Amazon has, it's hard to know which one is the best for you.
We've compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions about backpacking flashlights to help you make your purchase decision today.
What does "peak intensity" mean?
The peak intensity rating is the maximum brightness that a flashlight can produce. It is measured in candelas (cd) or lumens (lm).
A higher peak intensity rating means that the flashlight can produce a brighter light.
What are Lumens?
The Lumen rating is a measure of the total amount of visible light emitted by a flashlight.
The higher the Lumen rating, the brighter the flashlight will be. Most flashlights have a Lumen rating of between 5 and 300.
What kind of batteries can I use in these flashlights?
These flashlights are designed for use with standard AAA alkaline batteries. We recommend Duracell, only because they have the longest shelf life and we have never had one corrode which will ruin your flashlight.
However, over the last 8 years we have used the eneloop brand rechargeable batteries (now owned by panasonic) and the powercell 8 AA/AAA battery charger (which is no longer available on Amazon)
Are these flashlights waterproof?
No, our top pick is actually only water resistant which can be splashed or even quickly dunked in water with no issue. The two streamlight flashlights we have don't have a waterproof rating, but they are definitely water resistant.
The last MagLite flashlight on our list is water proof which means it can be fully submerged in water with no worries and it is the only one that we've accidentally washed.
Do I want a flashlight with a tail switch or a side switch?
It's all personal preference, these flashlights are small enough that the tail switch is the best option. Once we got used to it, it became second nature.
In our experience a tail switch is less prone to accidental pressing while in our pockets. The flashlights that we've had with side switches weren't as durable, but with that being said they were also cheaper flashlights.
What does EDC mean?
EDC is short for "Every Day Carry" these are products that are marketed to carry with you at all times that are designed to keep you more prepared and resilient.
